Reflections on the Past Two Years following the COVID Lockdown
Listen to this message online: Taking Time to Praise God!

Two years ago, this weekend (March 22, 2020), our country went into a COVID Lockdown that shut schools, businesses, and other areas down which included thousands of churches across America. As I reflect over these past two years, I want to share some praises to God with you as a church family. We read in Psalm 108:3 “I will praise You, O LORD, among the peoples.”
  1. Praise God for the staff and deacons’ leadership and determination to offer some type of worship experience even on a limited basis.
  2. Praise God for Ray’s music leadership, as well as Lauren, Joe Rukat, Jon Haney, Mike Bonham, Jeremy and TracyTichenor, Mike Oakley, and others for all the IT technical workings that got us up and running so we could have our FIRST EVER online presence via Facebook. Of course, we later moved to YouTube and had 474 views on March 29. You can go all the way back to March 22, 2020 and see every worship service in the archives with the exception of  “snow Sunday.” Our first online service was about 32 minutes long.
  3. Praise God for those music and media team members for coming up with new ideas and resources each week to improve our online presence and the new ministry which went into our membership’s homes for 9 weeks until we could open our doors on a limited basis. We had viewers from SC, NC, KY, OH, ID, TX, PA, and other states.
  4. Praise God for all of you who stepped up and contributed extra finances to purchase new equipment during those days that we needed desperately.
  5. Praise God for those of you who kept our church office and weekly Food Bank open to serve our community. You moved the operation outside in the cold to offer a drive -thru service to cut down on COVID exposure. Feeding those in need was extremely important during those days.
  6. Praise God for bringing Rev. Ken Forrester our way for 13 months to challenge us in our ministry and to prepare us for the future (Sep 27, 2020 thru Oct 2021).
  7. Praise God for Ray and so many others who worked so hard for us to move our worship services into our gym when we faced the MOLD issue. We worshiped in the gym for six months (Nov 8, 2020 thru April 18, 2021). We were able to welcome all our people back and offer more spacing during COVID precautions. The media equipment and musical instruments had to be moved and a new stage had to be constructed under Julian Davis’ leadership along with a large screen.
  8. Spotlights had to be operated weekly by Greg Tichenor in the gym to ensure more lighting for online presentations. We praise God!!
  9. Praise God for all those who worked behind the scenes that I have forgotten the names; in security, in the nursery, in the kitchen, and other places.
  10. Praise God that we remained opened through all of this because thousands of churches closed; and some have closed permanently in America. Barna Research Group reports that 1 in 5 churches in America closed permanently within 18-months of COVID (Aug 2020). “A Barna Research study released in November 2021 found that 38% of pastors had considered quitting the ministry in the past year, and that number is even higher (46%) for pastors under the age of 45.” Many say it was due to the stress of dealing with COVID in ministry and keeping the church going. Research has estimated that 25% of people who attended church pre-COVID have not and will not return. Some of our BBA churches still haven’t recovered.
  11. Praise God that our Sunday morning worship attendance is now back to where it was in late February and March of 2020. And that God has continued to add to our church family new members to include many baptisms.
  12. Praise God also that through your faithful increased giving we have exceeded our budget in tithes and offerings for the first time in four years! As a result, we have been able to accomplish many new building projects under the direction of Roy Dodd, our resident building engineer!

Time will not allow for me to go on, but I wanted to highlight how faithful God was as we prayed, obeyed, and worked to ensure we had a weekly worship services available online and later in person again. Now we have a permanent online worship ministry that we probably would not have had had there not been a crisis.

And all God’s people said, AMEN! - Rev. Don Bickers

Also, listen as Dustin adds a 13th thing to be thankful for!
